  • Description

From spies in the sky to spies in the wall of the US Moscow Embassy - on the fourth day of the United Nations Security Council meeting on Russia's allegations of US spying, American UN Ambassador Cabot Lodge May 26 produced evidence almost as sensational as any exhibited in Moscow of the U-2 plane and its equipment. Lodge, produced a wooden plaque presented to the US Embassy by the Russian Government, a plaque with a difference - it contained a minature transmitter and microphone.

This, inferred Lodge, was Russia's spy in the US Embassy. The equipment would have picked up conversations in the Moscow Embassy and relayed them to Soviet listening posts.

USSR's motion condemning USA spying was defeated by 7-2, with Ceylon and Tunisia abstaining, and Poland voting with Russia. In the afternoon the 'small powers' resolution calling for Big Four talks under UN auspices was discussed.
