    Dr. John A. Llewellyn, a 34-year-old native of Cardiff, Wales, now teaching at Florida State University, will be one of the new scientist members of the U.S. astronaut team.

    Confirming his appointment, Llewellyn said today he was "looking forward enthusiastically" to joining the team.

    He was the first foreign-born candidate to be identified as chosen by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The appointment of 11 to 12 new astronauts is to be announced officially next Monday.

    A requirement that astronauts be native-born Americans war lifted last year.

    Llewellyn, whose research work has been concentrated on "chemical reactions in gases," came to Florida State in 1960 as a research associate in the Chemistry Department. In 1964, he joined the faculty of the School of Engineering Science, teaching astronautics.

    He became a U.S. citizen a year ago. His wife, the former Valerie Davies-Jones of Cardiff is not naturalized. They have one son, Gareth, 9, and two daughters. Sian, 5, and Ceri, six months old.
