Football -- and Nottingham Forest beat Southampton on Saturday (16 March) to win the English League Cup by three goals to two.

SYNOPSIS: Southampton had Alan Ball, a survivor from England's World Cup winning team of 1966, inspiring their mid-field and were very much on their mettle during the opening moments of the match.

So much so in fact that they took the lead after fifteen minutes with a goal from David Peach -- nominally a defender.

Jubilation from Southampton's supporters -- but their joy was perhaps a little premature. In the second half Forest, who are also League Champions and European Cup quarter finalists, found their form.

Within six minutes young Gary Birtles had scored for Forest -- and he followed u this goal with another fourteen minutes from the end.

Now it was the Forest fans' turn for excitement -- and here's Birtles again.

It looked like the end of it all for Southampton, as Forest's Tony Woodcock took the score to three-one, but there was no respite for the Nottingham defenders -- and Southampton had the consolation of a last-minute goal from Nick Holmes to make the final score a creditable three-two.
