In Cape Town May 31 - as Premier Dr. Verwoerd was making his Union Day?

  • Description

In Cape Town May 31 - as Premier Dr. Verwoerd was making his Union Day speech at Bloemfontein - opponents of his polices staged a big protest. Over three thousand of them - of all races and callings - marched in a great demonstration against apartheid.

Thousands of people lined the route and many of them - Africans, Cape Coloured and Whites - joined in. In fact, the numbers were greater than the organizers had expected, and large crowds had to stay outside the hall where speeches were mode.

One of the leaders of the protest was the Archbishop of Cape Town, Dr. Jose de Blank, who said the day was not one for celebration but for shame and penitence.
