  • Description

THE CLIMAX TO THE EUROPEAN MOTOR RALLY SEASON GETS UNDERWAY TOMORROW (SUNDAY) WHEN 180 DRIVERS SET OUT FROM LONDON THE 2,350 MILES INTERNATIONAL RALLY OF GREAT BRITAIN. THE MARATHON EVENT HAS ATTRACTED DRIVERS AND CARS FROM TEN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES HOPING FOR SUCCESS IN THE ROYAL AUTOMOBILE CLUB'S WORLD MANUFACTURING CHAMPIONSHIP.

GENERALLY, THE RALLY PROVIDES THE CLIMAX TO THE EUROPEAN DRIVERS' CHAMPIONSHIP, BUT THIS HAS ALREADY BEEN WON BY FINLAND'S RAUNO AALTONEN OF THE BRITISH MOTOR CORPORATION'S TEAM. HIS VICTORY WAS ASSURED WHEN THE LANCIA TEAM OF RENE TRAUTMAN AND CLAUDINE BOUCHET, OF FRANCE, WITHDREW.

AHEAD OF THE DRIVERS ARE FIVE DAYS OF HARD GOING THROUGH ENGLAND, SCOTLAND AND WALES. THERE ARE FIFTY-EIGHT STAGES OVER PUBLIC ROADS AND SPECIALLY MARKED OUT FOREST TRACKS. ON PUBLIC ROADS COMPETITORS HAVE BEEN RESTRICTED TO AN AVERAGE OF 30 MILES PER HOUR, AND ANY EXCEEDING THIS LIMIT WILL BE SEVERELY PENALISED.

RAUNO AALTONEN IS FAVOURED TO WIN THE OUTRIGHT EVENT, BUT THE FORD TEAM ARE EXPECTED TO TAKE OUT THE TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP. OVERSEAS ENTRIES HAVE COME FROM BELGIUM, FRANCE, HOLLAND, EAST AND WEST GERMANY, ITALY, IRELAND, NORWAY AND SWEDEN.
