Background: In Japan, skiing on silvery snow at winter sports runs abounding in the nation's mountainous country is a popular sport for thousands o citizens. But for those unable to make the long and crowded trip to the booming mountain ski slopes, many Tokyo citizens learn and practise on a 1000 ft - long slope of ice shavings an hour from the city.

The slope needs 220,000 lb of ice a day to maintain a good surface for the 12000 skiers using it each week.

The slope built by an enterprising Tokyo sports arena operator is on the hills of Sayama, 30 miles north west of the capital.
