    PRESIDENT DE GAULLE'S SUPPORTERS TOOK 38.46 PER CENT OF THE VOTES WHICH IS ENOUGH, ACCORDING TO COMPUTER CALCULATIONS, FOR THEM TO RETAIN AN ABSOLUTE MAJORITY IN THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY.

    WITH RESULTS KNOWN FOR 260 OUT OF 468 CONSTITUENCES THE GAULLISTS HAD WON 57 SEATS OUTRIGHT AND WERE IN A FAVOURABLE POSITION FOR THE SECOND BALLOT IN ANOTHER 92.

    SUPPORTERS OF M. FRANCOIS MITTERAND, WHO IS TRYING TO UNIFY FRANCE'S LEFT-WING PARTIES INTO A POLITICAL FEDERATION, WON TWO SEATS AND WERE IN A FAVOURABLE POSITION TO TAKE ANOTHER 92 IN ANOTHER BALLOT.

    THE DEMOCRATIC CENTRE, LED BY M. JEAN LECANUET, WON THREE SEATS AND WERE FAVOURABLY PLACED FOR ANOTHER 31. THE COMMUNISTS WON FOUR SEATS AND THEIR CHANCES LOOKED GOOD FOR 12 OTHERS.

    AN UNOFFICIAL FORECAST OF THE FINAL ELECTION RESULT AFTER THE SECOND POLL NEXT SUNDAY GAVE THE GAULLISTS BETWEEN 255 AND 288 SEATS OUT OF THE 486 AT STAKE.

    M. GEORGES POMPIDOU, THE PRIME MINISTER WHO STOOD FOR ELECTION FOR THE FIRST TIME, WAS ELECTED OUTRIGHT IN SAINT FLOUR, CENTRAL FRANCE. SEVEN OTHER CABINET MINISTERS OUT OF THE 26 FIGHTING WERE DECLARED ELECTED OUTRIGHT WHILE THE COUNT WAS STILL ON.
