"They descended on old Montreal this morning, almost a thousand angry blue-collar workers in 400 trucks. They jammed every street in the area. When the blockade reached gigantic proportions they left their street-cleaners, dumpers and garbage-trucks, and assaulted the steps of City Hall. The stately brass doors were covered with stickers and leaflets. Mounds of debris were heaped on the steps - beer-cans, papers, even the stuffing from mattresses as the City Hall began to resemble the city dump. The workers have been offered an eight-and-a-half percent raise on a one year contract. The union wants fourteen-and-a-half. Right now, blue-collar workers make an average of slightly more than six dollars and hour. So far the only sign of workers' discontent has been a tendency for traffic-lights to malfunction during rush hour. The union denies responsibility but they say today's protest is only the beginning if negotiations don't resume soon."

Background: In Canada, striking Montreal dustmen - frustrated after weeks of bargaining for increased pay - finally decided to take their problem direct to Montreal's Mayor Drapeau at City Hall. On Thursday (30 June) they drove up in a convoy of garbage-trucks, creating a huge traffic-jam, and then emptied their dustbins onto the City Hall steps.
