  • Description

FRANCE'S 'SWING-WING' AIRCRAFT, THE MIRAGE G, MADE ITS FIRST PUBLIC APPEARANCE TODAY (WEDNESDAY) AT ISTRES IN SOUTHERN FRANCE.

THE VARIABLE GEOMETRY PROTOTYPE BUILT BY AVIONS MARCEL DASSAULT PUT ON A DAZZLING DISPLAY OVER THE AIRFIELD AT ISTRES, NORTH OF MARSEILLES. JOURNALISTS WATCHED THE SLEEK, SILVER, NEEDLE-NOSED AIRCRAFT BEING BROUGHT FROM ITS HANGAR FOR ITS 17TH TEST FLIGHT.

IT TOOK OFF AFTER A RUN OF 400 YARDS (400 METRES) TO SHOOT ALMOST VERTICALLY INTO THE SKY. THEN THERE CAME A SERIES OF LOW-LEVEL PASSES, THE WINGS MOVING FROM 20 TO 70 DEGREES.

THE SINGLE-ENGINE MIRAGE G IS THE FIRST SWING-WING AIRCRAFT BUILT IN WESTERN EUROPE. THE UNITED STATES HAS ITS F-111 SUPERSONIC COMBAT AIRCRAFT, AND THE SOVIET UNION HAS BUILT BOTH SINGLE-ENGINE AND DOUBLE-ENGINE SWING-WING MACHINES.
