FEB 18 WAS JUST ANOTHER CHURCH-GOING SUNDAY FOR THE ROMAN CATHOLIC COMMUNITY AT CHADWELL HEATH IN ESSEX, AND IN THE MORNING THE DEVOUT MADE THEIR WAY - AS THEY HAVE BEEN DOING FOR THE LAST 2 3/4 YEARS - TO THE "MOBY DICK" PUBLIC HOUSE...NOT FOR SHORT OR LONG DRINKS BUT FOR HOLY COMMUNION.

WHILE THE USUALLY OVERCROWDED PART OF THE HOUSE LIES SILENT, WITH MUGS, GLASSES AND POLISHED BEER ENGINES STANDING IDLE IN THE HOURS BEFORE OPENING TIME, UP TO 200 PEOPLE GATHER IN THE ADJOINING BAR WHERE MASS IS SAID AND THE SACRAMENT ADMINISTERED BY FATHER ALLISS
CHURCH MEMBERS COME EARLY TO SET UP AN ALTAR OF BAR TABLES.AN EMPTY BAR SERVES AS VESTRY AND CONFESSIONAL.AND WHILE, FOR THE DURATION OF THE SERVICE, THE "PUB" BECOMES A CHURCH, PRIEST AND CONGREGATION ARE EQUALLY AT THEIR EASE HALF AN HOUR LATER WHEN PINTS OF BITTER ARE DISPENSED AS THE BAR RESUMES ITS SECULAR STATUS.

FATHER HEENAN, BROTHER OF THE ARCHBISHOP OF LIVERPOOL AND ONE OF THE TWO CATHOLIC PRIESTS IN THE AREA, EXPLAINED: "IT WAS A BIT OF A JOURNEY TO OUR CHURCH FOR THE ROMAN CATHOLICS IN THIS AREA.WE HAD OUR EYE ON THIS SITE FOR A CHURCH, AND WHEN THE PUB WAS BUILT WE ASKED IF WE COULD SAY MASS HERE." FATHER HEENAN BELIEVES SUCH A SERVICE IN A PUB IS UNIQUE, "BUT WE HAVE THE CONSENT OF THE BISHOP - AND AFTER ALL, THE FIRST MASS WAS THE LAST SUPPER, AND THAT WAS IN A DINING-ROOM.
