  • Description

Singapore students demonstrated outside a district court on Wednesday (11 December) in protest over the trial of their leader on charges of rioting.

The demonstration coincided with the opening of the trial of Tan Wah Piow, president of the Singapore University Students' Union, who was arrested last October 30th. The 23-year-old Tan, a bearded architecture student, was arrested with two industrial workers at the offices of the Pioneer Industries' Employees' Union. Tan has been leading a student campaign for higher wages for Singapore's industrial workers, claiming that more than half of the families in Singapore are on "the poverty line".

This week's demonstration, which saw nearly a thousand of Tan's student followers and workers trying to gain access to the courtroom, was tightly controlled by police and unmarked by violence. At one point, during a recess, Tan emerged from the courtroom and addressed the demonstrators through a megaphone. He also joined them for lunch on the courthouse lawn.
