  • Description

THE LINER "EMPRESS OF BRITAIN" SAILED OUT OF THE BRITISH PORT OF LIVERPOOL ON MARCH 28TH LEAVING 900 TONS OF HERE CARGO BEHIND. LYING ON THE WHARFSIDE IT JOINED THOUSANDS OF TONS OF FREIGHT - MUCH OF IT PERISHABLE - STRANDED BY A STRIKE OF 10,000 DOCKWORKERS.

AFTER SEVEN DAYS, ON MARCH 30, THE DISPUTE WAS SETTLED - BUT NOT UNTIL HEAVY LOSSES WERE RECORDED AMONGST STORED FREIGHT.

OVER 80 VESSELS OF ALL SIZES LAY IDLE AT THEIR BERTHS ALONG THE MERSEYSIDE AMIDST SILENT CRANES AND DESERTED WHARFS. IN THE HOLDS OF MANY WAS GBP750,000 WORTH OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES, MUCH OF IT UNREFRIGERATED, STEADILY ROTTING BECAUSE NOBODY WOULD UNLOAD IT. SIMILAR PILES OF PERISHING CARGO WERE SCATTERED AROUND THE WHARFS WHILE STRIKERS HELD MEETINGS ALONG THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE DOCKS.

THE DISPUTE STARTED ON BOARD THE NEW ZEALAND FREIGHTER "OTAIO" WHEN IT WAS CLAIMED THAT A GANG OF MEN UNLOADING INCLUDED MEMBERS OF THE STEVEDORES AND DOCKERS' UNION, WHICH WAS EXPELLED FROM THE TRADE UNION COUNCIL. THIS, THE STRIKERS SAID, AMOUNTED TO USING NON-UNION LABOUR.

IN THE MEANTIME, LOCAL HOUSEWIVES FACED A COSTLY WEEKEND FOR THEIR VEGETABLE SUPPLIES. DEALERS WARNED THAT UNLESS THE STRIKE ENDED WITHIN THE NEXT FEW DAYS THERE WOULD BE AN ASTRONOMICAL RISE IN PRICES.
