  • Description

DURING THE NEXT FEW MONTHS, THE BRITISH POST OFFICE WILL CO-OPERATE WITH THE UNITED STATES NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION (N.A.S.A.) IN A SERIES OF EXPERIMENTS TO ASSESS THE TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY OF LONG-DISTANCE COMMUNICATION BY ARTIFICIAL EARTH SATELLITES.

THE BRITISH TRACKING STATION - AT GOONHILLY DOWNS IN CORNWALL - WAS SHOWN TO NEWSMEN ON APRIL 30. TELEVISION, TELEPHONE, TELEGRAPH AND OTHER SIGNALS ARE TO BE TRANSMITTED BETWEEN GROUND STATIONS IN THE U.S.A. AND GOONHILLY DOWNS.

TWO EXPERIMENTAL SATELLITES ARE TO BE LAUNCHED INTO ORBIT BY N.A.S.A. DURING 1962. THESE WILL CONTAIN RADIO RECEIVERS AND TRANSMITTERS, ENABLING SIGNALS RECEIVED AT THE SATELLITE FROM ONE GROUND STATION TO BE AMPLIFIED BEFORE RE-TRANSMISSION TO A SECOND GROUND STATION. THE FIRST SATELLITE, CALLED "TELSTAR", IS EXPECTED TO BE LAUNCHED IN JUNE.

THE SECOND SATELLITE, KNOWN AS "RELAY", IS TO BE LAUNCHED LATER THIS YEAR. THE MAXIMUM DISTANCE FROM THE EARTH WILL BE ABOUT 3,000 MILES. EACH SATELLITE WILL TAKE ABOUT 2 1/2 HOURS TO COMPLETE ONE ORBIT OF THE EARTH, THE MAXIMUM PERIOD OF MUTUAL VISIBILITY BETWEEN THE U.S.A. AND U.K. GROUND STATIONS BEING SOME 30 MINUTES.

DURING THIS TIME, BOTH COUNTRIES WILL BE EXCHANGING A BRIEF TELEVISION PROGRAMME. TELEVISION NETWORKS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE ATLANTIC WILL BE RELAYING IT.
