  • Description

Twenty-two miners were killed in an underground explosion at a coalmine in Bishop, Virginia, U.S.A., October 27.

Of the 188 men in the mine, 166 made it to safety, many of them with faces streaked by smoke and dust. For rescue teams, working in two-man relays, brought out the rest. The 22 bodies had been recovered by nightfall.

A company official said that the blast had probably been caused by a misplaced dynamite charge.

Crowds of mining families rushed to the five-mile long mine as news of the accident spread.

For them it was the nightmarish repetition of an accident in February 1957 when 37 miners died in the same mine.
