    At the opening of its winter session in Jerrusalam yesterday (21 October) the Israeli Knesset (parliament) launched into an emergency debate on the decision of the United Nations to admit the Palestine Liberation Organisation to its forthcoming debate on the Middle East.

    The Knesset debate was opened by the Likud opposition leader, Mr. Menachem Begin, who denounced the UN's decision to admit the PLO as observers, saying that the aim of the organisation was to destroy Israel. The PLO, he said, was responsible for a series of murders and other outrages, ranging from the hijacking of aircraft all over the world to the assassinations at Munich and in several Israeli settlements.

    Israeli Foreign Minister Mr. Yigal Allon, replaying, made no direct comment on the UN decision, but said that Israel had already declared its readiness to try to solve the so-called Palestinian problem by negotiation.

    Later in the day, Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, attending a meeting of the United Jewish Appeal -- an American charity -- at the Hilton Hotel in Tel Aviv that the Israeli government was prepared to take risks in negotiations with the Arabs, but promised he would let the Israeli electorate decide whether it wanted to trade territory for the right peace terms.
