Background: Today was Anzac Day--the Anzacs being Australian and New Zealand Forces who fought alongside Britain in both world wars--and in commemoration of their war dead wreaths were laid at the Cenotaph in London. The wreath layers included Sir Keith Holyoake, the New Zealand Prime Minister who is in London for Far East combined defence talks, and the Australian High Commissioner in London, Sir Alexander Downer.

SYNOPSIS: Sunday was Anzac Day. In London, a wreath-laying party at the Cenotaph, Britain's national was memorial, was headed by New Zealand Prime Minister Sir Keith Holyoake--on the left--and the Australian High Commissioner in London, Sir Alexander Downer. The date recalls the World War Two Anzac landing at Gallipoli and honours the thirty thousand Australian and New Zealand dead in six major wars.

The wreath-laying ceremony, with a two minutes' silence, was similar to thousands held in towns throughout Australia and New Zealand.

Sir Keith, who was in London for Far East defence talks and trade meetings with British leaders, left for Paris later in the day for a meeting with French President Georges Pompidou. He was hoping to discuss New Zealand's butter exports to Britain, and how they would be affected if she joins the Common Market, whose members have their own butter supplies.
