Three U.S. space capsules have arrived in Montreal where they will go on display at Expo 67, the World Exhibition which opens April 28. The three capsules will form part of a comprehensive exhibit of space equipment in the American Pavilion.
Structural work on the huge transparent dome is now complete and work inside is going ahead rapidly. The spacecraft are being installed first so that they can be hung by parachutes from the ceiling of the 200 foot high dome.
This Gemini capsule is the one in which astronauts Frank Borman and James Lovel circled the earth for two weeks in 1965. Also going on display is Friendship 7, from the Mercury series, and an Apollo 202, similar to the one which will carry astronauts to the moon.
When it is completed, the space exhibit will look like this model. Visitors will get to it by riding up an eight storey escalator ...... the longest in the world. At the top, they'll walk through a simulated lunar landscape, and examine exotic space hardware like this Lunar Exploration Module ..... a sophisticated robot which will collect first-hand information about the moon.
Other exhibits will include the story of film making in America ...... with showings of the greatest scenes from Hollywood movies.
Altogether the pavilion is expecting to receive ten million Expo visitors.
