SYNOPSIS: Tananarive -- capital of the Malagasy Republic which was battered by Cyclone Eugenie on Monday. Winds of fifty miles an hour (80 kms) uprooted trees and hurled them against buildings -- causing damage and death. Even concrete power poles suffered in the storm -- described locally as the worst for 45 years. Trees crashing onto houses in Tananarive caused the deaths of four children. And outside Tananarive, hundreds of families were reported homeless after the cyclone. Hundreds of miles of roads were described as impassable.

Tropical cyclones are not unusual at this time of the year -- and the people of the Malagasy Republic are generally prepared for them. However Cyclone Eugenie was much more intense than usual -- and the work of clearing up is expected to take many weeks.
