  • Description

A Government proclamation this afternoon extended the state of emergency to cover the whole of Tunisian Government communique stated this afternoon that the French Air Force had bombed and machine gunned the Remada district at seven o'clock this morning. The planes came over from Algeria in successive waves. There were no details of casualties.

About 5,000 men demonstrated in Bizerta under the direction of the Governmental Neo-Destour party. They called for the evacuation of French forces and asked for aims to defend the Fatherland.

Another demonstration of 3,000 people took place at Mateur, between Tunis and Bizerta.

The French Army lost several killed and wounded when the Tunisian Army, reinforced by civilian irregulars, attacked French positions at Ramada, Southern Tunisia. The French Commander was given air support at dawn and the attackers were repulsed to positions north of Remada.

A Tunisian communique issued last night makes it evident that the Tunisian authorities intend to provoke one armed clash after another in the Central South Desert Zone with the aim of reinforcing the Tunisian-Moroccan political drive to expel French forces from the two countries. A proclamation issued by the Neo-Destour party announced the "general mobilisation" of the party's supporters for a "week of vigilance."
