  • Description

Israel agreed on Sunday (9 July) to attend new talks with Egypt and the United States on a Middle East Peace but gave advance warning that Egypt's latest proposals stood no chance of acceptance. Speaking to reporters in Jerusalem after the Israeli Cabinet held it's weekly Sunday session, Prime Minister Menachem Begin said that Foreign Minister Moshe Dayan would join the talks in London on July 18 and with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ibrahim Kamel and United States Secretary of State Cyrus Vance. Speaking for the Labour Party Opposition in the absence of leader Shimon Peres, who has been in Vienna holding talks with Chancellor Kreisky, Willy Brandt and Anwar Sadat, Yigal Allon spoke to newsmen about the opposition's point of view.

SYNOPSIS: The five hour Cabinet meeting was attended by Cabinet Ministers Ezer Weizman and Moshe Dayan and they agreed to send Mr. Dayan to London in spite of the fact that they considered the Egyptian plan an extremist document. Opposition spokesman Yigal Allon presented his Labour party's point of view to newsmen, followed by Mr. Begin.
