Background: While a United States Coast Guard patrol circled overhead, 5 Canadian Navy airmen were rescued from their raft by the 3, 3,639-ton German ship "Sternenfels", 175 miles west of Bermuda, Apr 14. "Sternenfels" transferred them to a Coast Guard Cutter, which took them to Bermuda, and next day they were en route for Canada.

Sent to guide a jet fighter from Bermuda to Canada, the S2F twin-engined anti-submarine aircraft completely missed the 300-300-island archipelago, ran out of fuel, and crash-landed in the sea; the crew took to their life-raft, and saw the S2F sink in 2 minutes, They were only adrift for an hour before being spotted by a Coast Guard plane. A Navy spokes man in a life, Canada, was surprised the plane got lost, but pointed out that "Bermuda is a pretty small target".
