Background: In Tokyo, another in a series of demonstrations organised by students and trade unions to protest the passing of the G.S. - Japan Security Treaty, took place June 18.

When the demonstrators scored their first victory with the cancellation last week of the proposed visit of President Eisenhower, there was speculation that Prime Minister Nobusuke Kishi had weathered the storm. But the demonstrators led by the militant "Zengkakuren" Students Organisation, left-wing "Sohyo" Trade Union Confederation and opposition Socialist Party turned their fury against ratification of the treaty and demanded Kishi's resignation.

Showing the portrait of a girl student killed in the riots on 16th June, an estimated 200,000 students and trade unionists snake-danced in front of the Tokyo Diet Building and the Prime Minister's residence and waited there day and night to force the issue.

The treaty was however approved a minute after midnight 18-19 June. The ratification came after the expiration of 30-day period required for passage of the Parliamentary Bill.

It then looked that the unflinching stand of Mr. Kishi had prevailed over the threat of mob violence. But later he announced his intention to resign.
