  • Description

THE LAST BRITISH GOVERNOR-GENERAL OF MALAWI, SIR GLYN JONES, LEFT THE CAPITAL, BLANTYRE, ON TUESDAY (5 JULY) AS THE COUNTRY BECAME A REPUBLIC WITHIN THE COMMONWEALTH.

THE FIRST PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF MALAWI, DR. KAMUZU BANDA, AND HIS WIFE WERE AT THE AIRPORT TO SAY FAREWELL TO THEIR OLD FRIEND. SIR GLYN FIRST WENT TO MALAWI...THEN THE BRITISH PROTECTORATE OF NYASALAND...TO TAKE UP THE POST OF CHIEF SECRETARY IN 1960. HE WAS SUCCESSIVELY GOVERNOR AND GOVERNOR-GENERAL AND AT THE AIRPORT FAREWELL DR. BANDA DESCRIBED HIM AS "OUR BELOVED GOVERNOR."
THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL'S CEREMONIAL DEPARTURE WAS THE FIRST FORMAL STEP IN THE CHANGE TO REPUBLICAN STATUS. THE MOVING FAREWELL AT THE AIRPORT MARKED THE END OF 75 YEARS OF DIRECT BRITISH RULE OVER MALAWI, SAID SIR GLYN. HE READ A MESSAGE FROM QUEEN ELIZABETH TO DR. BANDA IN WHICH SHE EXPRESSED HER PERSONAL GOODWILL AND SATISFACTION THAT MALAWI HAD CHOSEN TO REMAIN WITHIN THE COMMONWEALTH. SIR GLYN ALSO SPOKE OF HIS OWN PLEASURE AT THE PEACEFUL TRANSITION TO REPUBLICAN STATUS AND THE FRIENDLY RELATIONS BETWEEN MALAWI AND BRITAIN.

IN HIS FAREWELL SPEECH, DR. BANDA ASSURED SIR GLYN ABOUT THE FUTURE OF WHITES IN MALAWI. BRITONS, EUROPEANS OR COMMONWEALTH CITIZENS WOULD BE WELCOMED IN HIS COUNTRY, AID DR. BANDA. HE SAID THEY HAD NOTHING TO FEAR IN MALAWI, AND PROMISED THAT HE WOULD NOT, AS HE PUT IT, "SACK ANYONE IN THE CIVIL SERVICE, ARMY OR POLICE JUST BECAUSE HE IS A EUROPEAN.

THE BRITISH NATIONAL ANTHEM WAS PLAYED FOR THE LAST TIME AT THE AIRPORT, AND A TWENTY-ONE GUN SALUTE WAS FIRED IN HONOUR OF THE DEPARTING GOVERNOR-GENERAL. "WHEREVER HE AND LADY JONES GO WE SHALL BE WITH THEM IN SPIRIT," SAID DR. BANDA.

LATER, AS MIDNIGHT AND THE BIRTH OF THE REPUBLIC APPROACHED, DR. BANDA AND A HUGE CROWD SAW A FIREWORKS DISPLAY AND THE UNFURLING OF THE FLAG.
