  • Description

The hopes of veteran Australian Rod Laver of winning the one major title that has always evaded him, the World Championship Tennis finals, ended in a marathon four-hour struggle with young Bjorn Borg of Sweden in Dallas on Friday (9 May).

Borg won a fine, pulsating semi-final 7-6, 3-6, 5-7, 7-6, 6-2. After the game, 36-year-old Laver announced his semi-retirement, saying that he found the four-month World Championship circuit too exhausting.

In the other semi-final, Arthur Ashe of the United States had an easier passage against another Australian, John Alexander. Ashe won 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, 6-4. Borg and Ashe contest the final, and the GBP20,000 first prize that goes with it, today (11 May).
