Background: In the Italian Grand Prix, at Monza, near Milan, Italy, Sept 11, Britain's 26-year-old John Surtees - on an MV Augusta - won the 500 cc event, thus becoming winner for the third successive year of the 500 cc world motor cycling championship.
During the race he skidded dangerously off the track, but was able to re-start immediately. His average speed for the 350-lap, 201.25km course was 185.105 km per hour.
He also won the 350cc title, again for the third successive year. His title was assured before the Monza 350cc event, in which he was forced to retire with engine trouble.
Italy's Carlo Ubbiala, also on an MV Augusta, retained the world 125 and 250cc titles. He won the 250cc title in 1956 also, and the 125cc title he has held five times in the last six years. His average speed in the 250 event was 175.504 km.p.h.
