    Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir on Monday (18 June) gave the opening address at an international convention in Jerusalem being attended by about 250 women journalists.

    The chairman of the convention's organising committee, Bella Almog, said the large number of delegates -- all members of the World Association of Women Journalists and Writers -- made it the biggest meeting of its type ever held.

    Women journalists from 38 countries, including Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and the continents of Africa and South America, are taking part. The largest national contingent -- of 110 -- is from the United States.

    In addition to the convention's working sessions, the delegates are also visiting kibbutzim (collective farms) and touring various parts of Israel. The convention ends on June 27.
