Background: After four days intermittent race riots the first death occurred in Jacksonville, Florida, U.S.A., Aug 29; a negro-driven car, fired on by police, crashed into a post, killing the driver. A second occupant was seriously injured. Police believed the car-driver and his passenger were responsible for bombing shops in the negro quarter with home-made incendiary bombs.
Trouble began Aug 27 when a group of white attacked negroes staging a sit-in demonstration at a lunch counter, Stabbings, beatings, shootings and acid-throwing followed - and 93 people were fined or jailed for their part in disturbances. Then came a comparatively quiet day, followed by renewed outbreaks - and the fatal car-crash.
