  • Description

From Kuala Lumpur yesterday (Tuesday), the Malaysian Prime Minister, Tun Abdul Razak, departed for Peking on what be described as a "journey of goodwill" after two decades of doubts and differences between Malaysia and the People's Republic of China.

Tun Razak told members of his Alliance party at the airport to farewell him that he hoped the visit would be the basis of enduring friendship between the two countries and contribute to lasting peace in South East Asia.

His visit to Peking to normalise relations was at the invitation of Chinese Premier Chou En-lai. The Malaysian Prime Minister and his 44-member party spend three days in Peking and two days in Shanghai.

Tun Razak said the visit was made possible by changes in Malaysia's foreign policy since 1970. Malaysia supported China's admission to the United Nations and had consistently followed a policy of non-alignment.
