Background: Despite mass Moslem abstentions in the large Algerian cities, M. Morin, French Delegate General in Algeria, announced early Jan 9 that the country's electors had giver a majority answer of "Oui" to President de Gaulle's request for confidence in his policy on Algeria. 27 million electors of Metropolitan France confirmed this decision Jan 8 - final day of the three-day referendum.
Apart from a few scattered incidents, the referendum passed off quietly in Algeria. A scene of one of these incidents was in the Tiaret Region. Five Moslem demonstrators were killed and 10 injured when they attacked a convoy of French army trucks bringing in Moslem voters from outlying villages. At Trumeles, a nearby village, all was quiet. Almost sixty per-cent of the population defied Nationalist calls for a total Moslem boycott, and voted.
Cheragas was another Algerian village where all was quiet, although the poll was light.
Complete figures show that President de Gaulle had been given the mandate he sought, and in now expected to proceed with his intention of giving Algerians the right to self-determination.
