  • Description

The Anglo-French Concorde supersonic aircraft no longer smokes -- according to the British Aircraft Corporation. One of the problem features of Concorde-001 was the thick smoke it left behind it, made up of clouds of carbon particles.

But the fourth Concorde to fly is the first Concorde to be built to the production aircraft standard. It incorporates aerodynamic developments to improve performance and, due to its 602 Olympus engine and a new combustion chamber, it is virtually smokeless.

The Concorde-002 made its maiden flight on January 10, 1973. In the following weeks it completed tests and was taken up to March 2 -- twice the speed of sound. Apart from being smoke-free when compared with the 001, prototype 002 is reported to be showing high standards of reliability.

Within six weeks of her maiden flight, 002 made a non-stop flight of 3,700 miles in a flight time of 3 hours and 27 minutes. The plane carried a full payload of 28,000 lbs (12,710 kilos) and landed with 12 tons of fuel in reserve.
