  • Description

In France, an estimated twenty thousand women marched through the streets of Paris on Saturday in support of abortion. They want the government to renew the national abortion law which comes up for debate next month.

SYNOPSIS: The marchers were drawn from a variety of political parties, trade unions and feminist movements.

The law they were supporting permits abortion on request during the first ten weeks of a woman's pregnancy. It was passed in 1975 after a bitter parliamentary debate, with fierce opposition from church and right-wing groups. The law's trial five-year period ends next year.

A number of women's groups organised the march in hurry. It was held only three days after the government announced it would present the law foe renewal on November the 20th -- allowing its supporters and opponents just under seven weeks to campaign for their different causes. Riot police lined the route which wound through southern areas of Paris to the Eiffel Tower. No Serious incidents were reported.
