  • Description

Speaking to a gathering of teachers in Havana Oct 10, Cuban Premier Fidel Castro admitted that counter-revolutionary forces in the Escambray mountain area were stronger than the forces of ex-President Batista, whom he overthrew.

Premier Castro's admissions belied claims of his regime to have crushed the revolt in central Cuba. It now seems probable that a force is operating not far from the city of Santa Clara, capital of the province of Las Villas.

His excited audience waved copies of newspapers carrying photographs of prisoners said to have been captured by Castro forces. Between breaks in his highly emotional address, they kept up a chant of "Paredom" (To the wall), the Cuban cry for execution.

The Cuban Armed Forces Ministry Oct 10 confirmed that captured rebels are to be tried by summary court martial this week in Santa Clara and elsewhere.
