  • Description

As a state of emergency was declared in South Africa, Mar 30, 30,000 Africans marched into the centre of Capetown to demand the release of coloured people detained by police after the recent disturbances.

Armoured cars, troops and police stood by,and crowds were eventually dispersed, but batons and tear-gas had to be used to control Africans in several towns.

Announcing the emergency decree in Parliament, South African Prime Minister, De Verwoerd, said the situation was completely under control, but if it worsened the Government would no hesitate to call in defence forces and take very step necessary. Greater violence would be met by greater force.
