    SENEGAL, IN COMMON WITH OTHER NATIONS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD, HAS CELEBRATED INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY. SEVERAL EVENTS WERE ORGANISED TO MARK THE OCCASION.

    M. MADY CISSOKO, MINISTER OF PUBLIC WORKS, TRANSPORT AND TOWN PLANNING, DEPUTISED FOR THE MINISTER OF EDUCATION TO GIVE A BROADCAST TALK ON WORLD LITERACY. HE SAID THE DAY MARKED A TURNING POINT IN THE FIGHT AGAINST WHAT HE CALLED "THIS SCOURGE".

    AT THE INSTITUTE OF YOUTH AND CULTURE, A CONFERENCE WAS HELD. THERE, THE INSPECTOR RESPONSIBLE FOR GENERAL EDUCATION, M. ABDOUL MADJIB GUENE, GAVE A TALK ON "LITERACY IN THE SERIES OF DEVELOPMENT".

    INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY RECEIVED BACKING FROM M. RENE MAHEU, DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNESCO (THE UNITED NATIONS EDUCATIONAL, SCIENTIFIC AND CULTURAL ORGANISATION). HE WENT TO EXPO '67 IN MONTREAL, CANADA, AT THE WEEKEND, TO MAKE AN APPEAL FOR A WORLD-WIDE CAMPAIGN AGAINST ILLITERACY.
