  • Description

Israeli naval and land forces launched raids near Sidon, 40 miles south of the Lebanese capital of Beirut, on Thursday (4 September).

Reports on the effectiveness of the raids vary. An Israeli Army spokesman confirmed that commandos landed near Sidon in rubber dinghies and clashed with what he described as "two Arab guerilla patrols."
The spokesman claimed the commandos killed several men and destroyed two jeeps. Further Israeli reports claimed gunboats lying off Sidon shelled "guerilla targets" in the area near the village of Ras-Abrou.

It's believed the Israel is suffered no casualties.

However, Arab reports on the raids differ. They claim five of their men were wounded, and that one died later in hospital. A spokesman said the Israelis only damaged one land-rover belonging to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).

The spokesman said the commandos used machine gun and artillery cover in their landing, but were eventually driven off.

Israel Radio said the offensive was mounted to forestall strikes by guerillas into Israel, expected because of the Palestinian discontent over the Israeli-Egyptian interim peace settlement.
