  • Description

Laurie Morgan, Australian, riding brown gelding, Salad Days, won the Great Badminton Championship event - the major trophy of the British Horse Society's three-day trials - ending April 22. Mr. Morgan, who was second in the event last year, won a gold medal at last year's Olympic Games in Rome, also on Salad Days.

At Badminton, he rode a fault-less round over the heavy jumping course, but incurred three-quarters of a point time fault. He finished the event with plus 14.98 points.

The weather, played a significant part in this year's trials, perhaps the most interesting for years. Most of the time it rained and umbrellas, macintoshes and waterproof boots were the order of the day. The Royal Family - keen horse lovers all - were there in force, headed by Queen Elizabeth, celebrating her 35th birthday, who presented the prizes.

Captain J.P.E. Welch, riding bay gelding, Mr. Wilson, won the Little Badminton event with plus 6.67 points.

In the Great Badminton Championship event, Michael Bullen, who had 61.33 penalty points in dressage on his Olympic grey mare. Mr. V.D.S. William's Cottage Romance, succeeded in improving his position to 16.93 penalty points to be third in the overall placing. He also got his second horse, Mr. William's chestnut gelding, Sea Breeze, into fourth place with 21.07 points (76.67 penalty points in dressage) and, but for falls on both horses, would have finished in a strong position.
