  • Description

SOUTH VIETNAMESE GOVERNMENT RANGERS TODAY (SATURDAY) STORMED THE IMPERIAL PALACE, IN THE ANCIENT CITY OF HUE, AND CLAIM TO HAVE KILLED 250 NORTH VIETNAMESE TROOPS. THE NORTH VIETNAMESE HAD BEEN DOGGEDLY HOLDING ON TO THE PALACE SINCE THEY LAUNCHED THEIR LUNAR NEW YEAR OFFENSIVE AT THE END OF JANUARY.

THIS FILM, TAKEN ON WEDNESDAY, SHOWS FRESH AMERICAN TROOPS SENT IN TO REPLACE THE WEARY MARINES WHO HAD BATTLED THE VIET CONG FOR TWO WEEKS, MOVING THROUGH THE SCARRED CITY TOWARD THE CITADEL, WHERE SOUTH VIETNAMESE FORCES CONTINUED THEIR ASSAULT ON THE DEEPLY ENTRENCHED NORTH VIETNAMESE POSITIONS.

AMERICAN AIR CAVALRY MEN THREW A PROTECTIVE RING ROUND THE CITADEL TO HALT NORTH VIETNAMESE ATTEMPTS TO REINFORCE THEIR COMRADES INSIDE THE ANCIENT BUILDING. A U.S. MILITARY SPOKESMAN QUOTED UNCONFIRMED GOVERNMENT REPORTS THAT 223 NORTH VIETNAMESE REINFORCEMENT HAD BEEN KILLED OUTSIDE THE CITADEL.

THE GOVERNMENT ADVANCE ON THE IMPERIAL PALACE HAS BEEN HAMPERED BY A DECISION NOT TO BOMB THE HISTORIC BUILDING. THE PALACE, A CITADEL WITHIN A CITADEL, PROVIDED THE NORTH VIETNAMESE TROOPS WITH READY-MADE FORTIFICATIONS AND GOVERNMENT FORCES REPORTED HEAVY CASUALTIES DURING THE TWO WEEKS THE BATTLE WENT ON.
