  • Description

Thousands of young left-wing frenchmen marched through Paris on Saturday (October 6) demanding that Chile's military junta release Communist party Secretary-General, Luis Corvalan and other imprisoned chilean Communists.

The French Communist Youth Movement organised the march which started at Saint Denis town hall. The demonstrators then marched across Paris to Ivory. They carried portraits of Luis Corvalan and banners and collected money for Chilean resistance as they went.

The Chilean military junta took power in a coup last month. The country's former Marxist President Salvador Allende died in the fighting. The regime has since jailed leading trade unionists and Allende supporters. Some have been executed.

A military tribunal has been investigating Senor Corvalan on charges of treason, subversion, illegal possession of arms and embezzlement from state enterprises.

If he is tried and convicted Senor Corvalan could also be executed by firing squad but Chile's Foreign Minister, Rear Admiral Ismael Huerta has said rumours of Senor Corvalan's impending execution are part of an outside campaign to damage the image of chile's new regime.

On the same day as the march, French lawyer Claude Lussan announced he had been asked to direct Senor Corvalan's defence. He was chosen by the Helsinki committee, a group which met recently in Helsinki to seek ways of helping victims of the Chilean coup d'etat.

Chile's Foreign Minister Ismael Huerta has said rumours of Senor Corvalan's impending execution are part of an outside campaign to damage the country's image. The French Communist Youth Movement organised this march.
