  • Description

Former West German Chancellor Herr Willy Brandt is in Zambia for talks with government officials on the problem of southern Africa and European affairs.

SYNOPSIS: Shortly after his arrival Herr Brandt went to State House in the capital, Lusaka, for a meeting with Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda. At the beginning of December Herr Brandt announced the names of the people who will serve on the International Commission for Development, of which he is President. This organisation will attempt to break new ground in North-South negotiations, in order to bring about economic changes aimed at giving poorer countries a better deal.

On Friday (30 December) The Times of Zambia newspaper urged Herr Brandt to use his influence to correct the present economic imbalance between the developed and developing nations. Zambia is at present in the throes of an economic crisis which some observers say could go as far as to bring about the "collapse of the nation". It has been caused by among other things a fall in world copper prices and the country's position as a "front-line" State in the Rhodesian guerrilla war. Recently President Kaunda has been urging Zambians to return to the land and develop the country's agricultural potential, instead of depending almost exclusively of money earned from copper exports.
