  • Description

MORE THAN A THOUSAND PEOPLE GATHERED IN JERUSALEM'S MAIN THOROUGHFARE YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) TO WITNESS THE RENAMING FOR ONE FAY OF ZION SQUARE. A SPOKESMAN FOR THE MAYOR OF JERUSALEM, SAID THAT THE SQUARE WOULD BE CALLED "SOVIET JEWERY SQUARE" IN RECOGNITION OF THE PROBLEMS FACING JEWS IN THE SOVIET UNION.

THE IDEA FOR THE SQUARE CAME FROM UNIVERSITY STUDENTS. AFTER A GREAT DEAL OF DISCUSSION BETWEEN THEM ON THE POSITION OF JEWS IN RUSSIA, THEY DECIDED SOME FORM OF RECOGNITION SHOULD BE GIVEN.

SPEAKING AT THE OPENING CEREMONY, THE MAYOR, MR. KOLLEK PAID TRIBUTE TO THE INITIATIVE OF THE STUDENTS. HE SAID THAT IT WAS DECIDED TO RENAME THE SQUARE, WHICH IS IN THE CENTRE OF THE CITY, "SOVIET JEWRY SQUARE" AS A TRIBUTE TO THE COURAGE OF SOVIET JEWS AND TO FORGE A LINK BETWEEN THEM AND ISRAEL.

THE OPENING CEREMONY WAS ORGANISED BY THE INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS' UNION. THE ONLY SPEECH WAS MADE BY THE MAYOR. THE REST OF THE CEREMONY WAS CARRIED OUT IN SILENCE WITH THE STUDENTS STANDING WITH ARMS LINKED. A NUMBER OF THEM CARRIED BANNERS AND PLACARDS CALLING FOR BETTER TREATMENT OF SOVIET JEWS.
