  • Description

Khmer Government troops have regained large areas of communist territory since the halt of United States bombing missions last Wednesday. The High Command in Phnom Penh claims that all highways for at least 20 miles around the capital are under government control.

This coverage illustrates a typical government operation since the bombing ended. The sweeps started with a bombardment by 105 mm. artillery -- ground forces are relying increasingly on heavy guns to replace bombing strikes.

Then 200 men of the Second Division, backed by Special Forces men -- Khmer Krem trained in Thailand -- moved into the jungle on either side of the read.

Their chief objective was a schoolhouse formerly occupied by Communist troops. The spearhead started the attack with grenade launchers; the Khmer Krem set up a mortar barrage on the read ahead; and armoured troop carriers swept the area with cannon fire.

Encountering only light resistance, the Government troops advanced two miles (three kms) along the read before digging in the protective bunkers for the night.
