    The Indian Prime Minster, Mrs Indira Gandhi, met a deputation of worried farmers in New Delhi on Sunday (6 July) to answer questions about their roles following the State of Emergency proclaimed on June 26.

    Mrs Gandhi explained the situation and said she hoped to relax the emergence measured when the political climate was calmer. She urged the farmers to increases production of food grains...in particular "basmati"...a race strain which brings in export earnings.

    Mrs. Gandhi's meeting came on the eve of a meeting she held with newsmen in New Delhi seeking an end to censorship. The Indian leader told the journalist that censorship had been imposed to prevent the disintegration of the country. She promised to consider steps which would lead to the liberal application of censorship.
