    18-year-old U.S. skater Terry Cubicka won accolades from the huge crowd at Moscow's Palace of Sports on Sunday (29 March) for his radical free skating performance.

    Cubicka was taking part in a special exhibition which included 26 of the world's best skaters.

    The three-hour exhibition was given by stars like the Soviet Union's Olympic dancing champions Pakomova and Gorshov and Britain's Olympic, European and World champion, John Curry.

    Cubicka stunned the skating purists when he introduced a back flip his routine just before the Winter Olympics in Austria last February.

    He then announced his intention of using the back flip in the Game, and experts wondered if the judges would disqualify him.

    However, they gave official sanction to the controversial acrobatic feat and scored Cubicka highly.

    Now the skating world is wondering what Cubicka will develop next, and whether he will become the major influence in free skating when Curry turns professional.

    His form and style will bring new direction to sport following Curry's innovations of virtual ice ballet routine .. and the many years of Soviet dominance.
