Background: Dr. Kurt Waldheim, Secretary-General of the Untied Nations, arrived in Jordan on Sunday (2 September), on the final stage of his five-nation tour of the Middle East.
Dr. Waldhaim who will be leaving Jordan on Wednesday (5 Sept.), to attend the Non-Aligned Conference at Algiers, has been undertaking a first-hand study of the Middle East to make his assessment of the current situation.
During his stay in Jordan, Dr. Waldheim met with King Hussein and the Jordanian prime Minister, Mr. Zeid El-Rifai.
Dr. Waldheim also visited the Sohneller Palestinian Refugee Camp and toured the Jordan-Israel ceasefire line by helicopter.
Dr. Waldheim told refugees that he would do his utmost to resolve their problem and that he shared their feelings over the poor condition in which they were living.
Jordan, the country with the longest ceasefire line with Israel, has expressed appreciation for Dr. Waldheim's visit, and his concern for the Middle east problem. However, officials there did not expect him to put forward any specific new peace proposals.
