  • Description

At least 31 people were killed and 70 injured on Monday (6 September), when a suburban train ploughed into the back of a main line express at Benoni, some 15 miles south of Johannesburg, South Africa.

SYNOPSIS: South African Railways investigators who examined the twisted wreckage of the trains rules out sabotage. The main line express was carrying black Mozambican gold miners from Johannesburg to the Mozambique capital of Maputo when the accident occurred. Firemen had to use oxy-acetylene cutting equipment to reach the dead and injured. Eye-witnesses said the express was halted at a red light when the suburban train rammed it from behind.

A survivor from the suburban train told reporters the force of the crash threw him half way down his carriage. He said the next thing he remembered was standing next to the train, looking down at a severed arm in the dust at his feet.
