    CANADA IS NOW JOINING IN WITH COUNTRIES AIR-LIFTING OIL TO ZAMBIA FOLLOWING THE SEVERANCE OF SUPPLIES TO ITS NEIGHBOUR BY RHODESIA, WHICH HAS ITSELF IMPOSED PETROL RATIONING. THE SHORTAGE OF PETROL IN ZAMBIA HAS REACHED THE STAGE WHERE SOME FILLING STATIONS ARE COMPLETELY OUT OF SUPPLIES.

    MOTORISTS IN ZAMBIA ARE OFTEN FORCED TO QUEUE UP FOR PETROL COUPONS AND AT THE FILLING STATION PUMPS. WHILE SOME STATIONS ARE COMPLETELY OUT OF PETROL OTHER HAVE SO LITTLE THAT THEY ARE ALLOWING ONLY TEN-SHILLINGS WORTH TO EACH MOTORIST. MEANWHILE, THE ZAMBIAN AUTHORITIES ARE FACED WITH THE PROBLEM OF STORING THE OIL THAT'S COMING IN BY ROAD AND AIR.

    BRITAIN IS FLYING DAILY CONSIGNMENTS OF OIL TO ZAMBIA FROM DAR-ES-SALAAM, TANZANIA, AND THE UNITED STATES IS COMPLETING TALKS ON CHARTERING CIVIL AIRCRAFT TO TAKE PART. A FULL-SCALE CANADIAN AIRLIFT IS EXPECTED TO TAKE PLACE THIS WEEK.

    (IN RHODESIA, PETROL RATIONING CAME INTO FORCE TODAY (TUESDAY), 12 DAYS AFTER BRITAIN ANNOUNCED AN OIL EMBARGO AS PART OF ITS BID TO BRING DOWN THE IAN SMITH REGIME WITH ECONOMIC SANCTIONS. FOR MOTORISTS THE MAXIMUM AMOUNT OF PETROL ALLOWED IS FOUR TO FIVE GALLONS A WEEK.
