  • Description

THE QUIET TOWNSHIP OF VERSAILLES, ONCE THE HOME OF FRENCH KINGS, SHUDDERED AND SHOOK TONIGHT (WEDNESDAY), AS BRITAIN'S TOP "POP" GROUP, THE BEATLES, GAVE A PREVIEW PERFORMANCE OF THEIR ART AT A LOCAL CINEMA. FOR THE BOYS FROM LIVERPOOL IT WAS A WARM UP BEFORE OPENING A SIX WEEKS SEASON IN PARIS.
THE OPENING PERFORMANCE AT THE VERSAILLES CINEMA FOLLOWED THE ESTABLISHED PATTERN OF BEATLE CONCERTS IN BRITAIN - HAND- CLAPPING, CHEERING TEENAGERS ALMOST DROWNING OUT THE SOUND OF THE MERSEY BEAT. AT ONE STAGE, A YOUTH CLAD IN A SCARLET SHIRT CLIMBED ON THE STAGE AND ATTEMPTED A SOLO DANCE PERFORMANCE, BUT WAS HAULED INTO THE SINGS BY STAGE-HANDS.
THERE WERE MORE BOYS THAN GIRLS IN THE AUDIENCE, BUT ONE ROW OF FRENCH YOUNG MISSES SWAYED BACKWARDS AND FORWARDS CLAPPING ALL THE TIME IN TIME IN RHYTHM WITH THE QUARTET. SAID ONE GIRL, ALMOST IN TEARS WITH JOY; "I CAN'T CLAP ANYMORE, MY HANDS ARE HURTING."
