  • Description

SIX PEOPLE WERE KILLED AND AT LEAST 50 INJURED YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) WHEN CRICKET FANS STAMPEDED OUTSIDE TICKET COUNTERS AT EDEN GARDENS GROUNDS IN CALCUTTA WHERE AUSTRALIA WERE PLAYING INDIA.

A SHOUTING CROWD OF 20,000, SOME OF WHOM HAD QUEUED ALL NIGHT, SURGED FORWARD AS THE TICKET OFFICE GATES WERE OPENED FOR THE FOURTH DAY OF THE FOURTH TEST MATCH.

AN OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE SAID THAT FIVE PEOPLE SUFFOCATED IN THE CRUSH AND A POST MORTEM WOULD BE CARRIED OUT ON THE SIXTH.

POLICE USED TEARGAS AND BATON CHARGES TO BREAK UP THE ANGRY CROWD AND TRIED TO PULL OUT PEOPLE WHO HAD FALLEN UNCONSCIOUS UNDER THE MILLING FEET. MOUNTED POLICE WERE CALLED IN BUT WERE STONED BY THE CROWD. THE CROWD SMASHED GLASS DOORS IN THE HOTEL WHERE THE TEAMS WERE STAYING AND 25 ARRESTS WERE MADE.

THE CRUSH FOR TICKETS -- ONLY 6,000 TO 7,000 WERE TO BE SOLD -- CAME WHEN THE TEST HAD REACHED A CRUCIAL STAGE, WITH INDIA FIGHTING TO SAVE THE MATCH AFTER THEIR SHOCK VICTORY OVER THE AUSTRALIANS IN THE THIRD TEST NEW DELHI.

THE FINAL RESULT OF THE FOURTH TEST WAS A VICTORY FOR AUSTRALIA BY 10 WICKETS, AND THEY TAKE A 2-1 LEAD IN THE FIVE MATCH SERIES.
