  • Description

FIELD MARSHAL JOHN OKELLO, WHO CLAIMS TO BE THE STRONG MAN BEHIND ZANZIBAR'S REVOLUTION, WAS FILMED AT A NEWS CONFERENCE BY VISNEWS CAMERAMAN RAY ROBINSON YESTERDAY (THURSDAY).

WEARING A BLACK DENIM UNIFORM WITH AN EAGLE AND GLOBE CREST ON HIS LEFT EPAULETTE, THE 32-YEAR-OLD FIELD MARSHAL SAID THE ISLAND REPUBLIC WOULD STAY WITHIN THE COMMONWEALTH BECAUSE "WE HAVE GOOD CONNECTIONS THERE." THE REPUBLIC WANTED "DEMOCRACY AND FREEDOM FOR ALL REGARDLESS OF RACE AND COLOUR." GENERAL POLICY WOULD BE DECIDED BY A CABINET "BUT IT WILL BE ENTIRELY DEMOCRATIC AND WILL NOT LEAN TO ANY BLOC."
AN AFRICAN WOMAN, ARMED WITH A BAYONET, GUARDED THE ENTRANCE TO THE BUILDING WHERE THE NEWS CONFERENCE WAS HELD. WHILE POSING FOR PHOTOGRAPHS THE FIELD MARSHAL HELD GUNS AND NEARBY WAS A BIBLE - FROM THIS HE CLAIMED TO HAVE GLEANED ALL THE MILITARY KNOWLEDGE HE NEEDED FOR THE COUP.

MANY ARABS HAVE BEEN ROUNDED UP AND PUT IN SPECIALLY GUARDED COMPOUNDS. THE FORMER GOVERNMENT WAS COMPOSED MAINLY OF ARABS, WHILST THE NEW REGIME IS PREDOMINANTLY AFRICAN.

RED CROSS OFFICIALS AND NURSES HAVE BEEN ASSISTING ARAB FAMILIES IN DISTRESS, PROVIDING FOOD AND COMFORT: THOSE INJURED IN THE COUP HAVE BEEN MOVED TO HOSPITAL FOR TREATMENT TO WOUNDS MOSTLY CAUSED BY PANGAS, CLUBS AND SWORDS.
