WEIGH-IN FOR PATTERSON-BONAVENA FIGHT IN NEW YORK; HEAVYWEIGHT JIMMY ELLIS PATTERSON COMMENT.

TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 2: REPORTER: "Jimmy Ellis, you've fought and beaten both Oscar Bonavena and Floyd Patterson. How do you rank them?"

ELLIS: "I think both of the guys are real great fighters, and tonight is going to really prove whether Floyd Patterson should go on or whether he should get out and get his combination off, he's got to be able to out speed the man, he's got to put it in together tonight -- you know the guys make the odds and say the fight is a seven to five favour, but (indistinct) because both fighters got two hands, both fighters are going to do their best, and I think the fight should be a toss-up".

    ANNOUNCER: "Bonavena, 206. Floyd Patterson, 191 3/4".

REPORTER: "Have you fought anybody recently of Oscar's style which is free-swinging and really bruising?"

PATTERSON: "I don't think so, no".

REPORTER: "How will you contend with that?"

PATTERSON: "I'll try to stay out of the range."

REPORTER: "You can hit and move?"

PATTERSON: "Yes, hit and move, stay out of range."

REPORTER: "Jimmy, do you think that Floyd Patterson will be able to contend with the brawling type of fight that Bonavena puts on?"

ELLIS: "That's the way I see it. Speed has got to come in, and we hope that age hasn't caught him, well slower, anything like this. If he's able to put up with the strength, with legs -- his legs have got to hold him, because this is where he's got to carry the fight, if he can get around on his legs and put his hands together like he always has, then he'll be OK tonight."

Background: Boxing... and at the weigh-in for the Patterson-Bonavena fight in New York on Friday (February II), heavyweight Jimmy Ellis -- who has beaten both men -- correctly predicted that the fight would be what he called a "toss-up".

He was proved correct later when Patterson outpointed the rugged Argentinean boxer over ten rounds.

At the weigh-in, shown in this film, Patterson talked about the fight.
